Mother's Restaurant, New Orleans, Louisiana

Why are these folks lined up all the way down the block for food? Especially in New Orleans? NOLA has a nearly unlimited number of places to dine. The answer is Mother's Restaurant. It is not fancy, just good. It has been serving up goodness since 1938 and was founded to serve those who worked in the CBD (Central Business District) or downtown. This client base included stevedores and dockworkers who worked up big appetites and wanted good food on a working person's salary. While the demographics may have changed, the same principals apply today as they did in 1938. Big portions of exquisitly prepared food at a fair price. There are lots of over-hyped, overpriced dining establishments in NOLA. This ain't one of them, just fabulous food, nothing more, nothing less. Plates piled high with southern fried goodness.

The no-nonsense dining room is decorated with pictures of the notable patrons who have enjoyed Mother's over the years...

Manager Marvin oversees the operation and makes sure everyone's meal and service are up to par. Note the empty gumbo bowl as the gang chows down on some of the best jambalaya extant...

This is some serious food, look at how plump those oysters are. And the lovely Ferdi Special sandwich- ham, roast beef and debris.

Pass the potato salad please!

Yours truly savoring one of many juicy, plump oysters during this visit...
Miss Pam serves up the good stuff. Good company and a table piled high with good fried seafood and a Dixie beer, it doesn't get any better than this! The only unfortunate thing is that Dixie beer moved its production out of New Orleans following Katrina a few years back... oh well, you can't have everything!
Jambalaya!

Debris takes on a whole new meaning at Mother's; it is something to savor and relish, not discard. According to Mother's website, debris is "the roast beef that falls into the gravy while baking in the oven." I don't think I've ever eaten anything so wonderful!
Pecan pie (background) and a bread pudding smothered in a most toothsome brandy sauce...

Where all the magic happens...

Oysters sizzling on a hot grill... wonderful!

Oyster Po'boy at Felix's New Orleans...

So perfect and delicious... the fried oysters, so crisp on the outside and tender and juicy inside, ripe lettuce with ripe tomatoes on the visibly wonderful and flaky Leidenheimer French bread, all slathered with plenty of New Orleans' own Blue Plate mayonnaise. One of the myriad things I miss about NOLA...

A Soviet-era mosaic depicting cosmonauts and celebrating Kazakhstan's role in space exploration. Ironically, the building now houses a bank...
